Robin McLaurin Williams was born on July 21, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Laurie Williams, was a former model from Mississippi. His father, Robert Fitzgerald Williams, was a senior executive at Ford Motor Company. After his parents divorced when he was only three years old. Young Robin and his siblings were raised by their mother. The talented actor and comedian attended Detroit Country Day School and the Juilliard School in New York City.
Williams began his career as a stand-up comedian in San Francisco. He starred in the hit TV series Mork and Mindy from 1978-to 1982. He later starred in such films as Dead Poets Society (1989), Awakenings (1990), and The Fisher King (1991). Williams was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the 1991 film, The Fisher King.
He won an Emmy Award for his role in the 2004 television movie, Surviving Christmas. Williams also won four Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and five Grammy Awards.
