Osho or Rajneesh was born on December 11, 1931, in Gadarwara, Madhya Pradesh, India. His parents were Brahman Hindus. His father was a forest Ranger and his mother was a housewife. He had two brothers and a sister. Osho’s childhood was spent largely in the company of his maternal grandparents, as his parents were often away on business.
Osho was a brilliant student and was admitted to one of the best schools in the state. He began his schooling at the age of seven and completed his studies in 1950. He then enrolled at Sagar University and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy in 1955. Afterward, he moved to the D.N. Jain College, where he completed his Master’s degree in Philosophy in 1957.
After completing his studies, Osho began teaching at a university in Jabalpur. He later left academia to start his own business, but it was not successful. He then returned to teaching and eventually became a spiritual teacher.
In 1958, Osho married Ila Devi, with whom he would have three children. The following year, he began teaching philosophy at Jabalpur University. In 1963, he was arrested and incarcerated for three years on charges of sedition and immorality, allegedly for mocking Gandhi’s teaching fellation.
Osho’s teachings emphasized the importance of meditation and self-awareness. He was critical of organized religion and believed that each person should find their path to spirituality.
